Música Pobre
Illustrations by João Drumond, art direction by John Romão, 2017.
The educational service of BoCA biennial organised a series of workshops for students titled “Música Pobre” (Portuguese for “Poor Music”). The name is based on the comparison traced by Dominic Gill between the work of Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina and the principles of Polish director Jerzy Grotowski (“Poor Theatre”). Gill proposes that “poverty” marks the music of Gubaidulina in the sense of reinforcing the fragility of the sound. Commissioned to illustrate the program, I made a series of images that depict musicians playing instruments that are not there, suggesting their shape by the movement of the player's hands.
